A Day in Life of Volunteer Firefighters (Research on perceptions and motivations)

People donate their time because they care about their community. I found this motivating video. If you get the chance consider contributing and volunteering. Many of these departments struggle with new recruits and sometimes budgets and manpower. There are many ways to contribute ranging from actual firefighting to raising awareness to administration to fundraising. Lots of stuff! These guys and gals don't get paid [or not much] for what they do and certainly this is a good place for our youth to get involved with climate change and other issues. Firefighters are all about good karma and doing good from actual fighting a fire, serving, or responding to accidents.

btw. I'm always looking for grant resources for if you have any for rural fire departments leave a comment and I will check it out. Thanx!

Research on What Shapes Firefighter Motivation and Perceptions?

Steve Rattner: Inflation subsided and median incomes are up

This is a solid explanation of the economy in charts. Likewise, there is some discussion on political approval ratings and how they may not be related to the economy alone [I'm neutral in politics. I have learned the value of objective viewpoints.]. What makes this video beneficial is that there is a discussion on the economy and a discussion of events and approval ratings. As business owners/executives, one should just be aware of the market and environment.

Open vs Closed Systems: Encouraging Alignment with Goals and Missions (Trust and Consistency)

All systems need a sense of internal consistency and its helpful if we as a people support the highest functioning systems we can create. It makes no difference if we are discussing business, government, non-profits, or any other organization. Supporting positive behaviors and encouraging greater alignment with the goals and missions of an organization in a way that leads to greater long term performance and trust of such organizations/institutions. To understand a system one must look at the inputs, process, and outcomes to understand a whole system and when its beneficial to create more adaptability through improving information inflows.

Open vs. Closed Systems:

Open systems take in new information and adjusts when issues arise and when it makes reasonable sense to be proactive on problems. They function at their best because they strive to be their best in a type of over the horizon thinking. They know their highest purpose and act accordingly.  Morality is high as such system act consistently to support that mission. Open systems in a free market economy are highly efficient and shun discrimination, bias, and corruption because it damages the whole for the benefit of the few [Pro social behaviors are normalized and encourage greater pro-social behaviors.].

Closed systems are not open to new information [often actively restricting it.], don't feel compelled to change, and continue down a certain path because those within that system lack a desire to change. They are insulated from the need to change and use permissiveness as a method of avoiding this change.  In free market economies discrimination and corruption are antithetical to the long term goals of society.

You may want to read about The Difference Between Open and Close System if you seek a more detailed perspective.

Hypothetical Situation [Illustrative Purposes Only]:

People want something and feel disdain for out-group members so they create chaos to benefit themselves. They act in destructive ways, manipulate systems and engage in large scale group bulling, targeting and misbehavior. Despite most people's awareness of these behaviors, and what the financial and racial/religious intent might be, they correctly relied on an embedded and immune free pass corruption due to misalignment of a system to more sociably acceptable values and purposes. The system stays out of alignment because of the lack of internal and external will to correct so the likelihood of repeat will continue.

Areas of Improvement and Encouraging Pro-Social Change:

Be positive and polite and encourage stakeholders to think about the bigger picture and work toward the strongest systems they can create[Its a duty for each generation.]. Sometimes there are all types of alternative goals and ulterior motives that get involved but the anchor should be the mission of the organization and the institution [The danger of rigid hype politics.]. All other goals and issues are secondary to the larger central purpose and shared values. It is the same if you are dealing with large organizational misbehavior or you are experiencing corruption [Can be any place on the planet.]. When systems are in alignment with their missions, people within those systems make choices to support those mission(s) through mutual benefit.

As another hypothetical example, in business that might be to sell XYZ widget for a profit to return stakeholder value as well as to contribute meaningfully to society by engaging positive corporate citizenship. While there may be other goals like developing new products, making more money, donating, best place to work, so on and so forth it is still the primary focus of the mission that should continue to take precedence. The other goals align with and support the main goals. When there is misalignment of the goals, whether stated or unstated, one will find waste and eventual decline. Free markets want to reduce misalignment and inefficiency of maladaptive business practices that reduce trust and engagement in the market.

I came across this article about the value of listening to others even when one is an expert. Experts should sometimes be reminded of the need to be open minded researchers, scientists, and positive change influencers through accurate knowledge or otherwise they get dogmatically stuck and irrelevant to their purpose as knowledge creators. Humility, Experts, and Flexibility While change is slow, all systems must change or decline, and thus it is a duty to encourage positive change within one's environment. Any place and anywhere. Namaste! 🙏

Escanaba City Counsel (December 21, 2023) Presentation on Growth in Events and Interest

Escanaba is a town in transition and the elements are coming together in a way that is leading to greater engagement and growth for the whole community. People are out and about socializing in town, they are attending events, decorating their houses, and creating a more enriching environment that has already attracted tourism interest and investment dollars. General mood is positive and people seem to be jolly and merry!

Particularly, I like the idea of busing people around to see the lights and encouraging the town to look festive. People love to come and see that stuff! Perhaps in the future consider a large scale community art project, contest for the best house and a prize/plague and feature on the city's website [Would work for small business as well in the downtown area to keep it looking great!]. It gets pictures online [social media], people visit during the holidays and residents move downtown to the visit local businesses.

Figuring out how to augment summer and winter events into a woven marketing strategy that attracts entrepreneurs and investment is what differentiates places that gains market exposure.  Much of that is marketing focus, available information, and actively searching out elements that enhance the whole town. i.e. attracting entrepreneurs and industrial investment through an exceptional living environment.

What you will also find is that people are engaged positively with government and supportive of each other [We might reflect on democracy at its root.]. Communities are built from this sense of togetherness and they thrive when people see each other as valued members of society [No discussion on politics, just solutions and improvement.  Its a beautiful thing seeing people working together.]. These people solve problems in a holistic way and government is the conduit to that beneficial change 👍 [🙏].

What would be nice and interesting to see is the encouragement of the very young people [18-25] to become involved in government in these intimate committees and allow them to share their diverse perspective to help build their town for the future [Also engaging them in a generational to generational way.] The power of engagement is at our fingertips if we know how to play the fiddle's tune right [i.e. knowing what to do and when to do it in economic growth is a challenging affair. So far they are moving the needle.].

The area is open to investment and I suspect they would respond positively to interest.

Louisville Bridge at Night in Photo

Photography is a hobby for me and I like to play around with pictures. My logic is that if I enjoy the outdoors and arts I should blend the two hobbies. On a rare occasion I may sell something but I don't really work on it much. Hoping to change that in 2024 as a hobby. Its just one of those things that sort of lingers in the background. If I someday start selling some I might decide to do something with it. Maybe just donate it to charity or spend a little on better equipment. For now just building my gallery and looking for a painting competition to join in San Diego. I think I could put something together. Sometimes you can find photo events and showing to submit pictures as well. They are more or less social events but sometimes you win something.

Work hard, build a career and enjoy the other things that make us part of humanity. One can be both business and a humanitarian; they are not mutually exclusive.

Delta County Commissioners Meeting (12/19/23)

The county meeting covered a number of issues that ranged from mail sorting all the way over to retirement. Mostly you want to watch and just understand the problems the county faces, opportunities they can capitalize on, and the solutions that help the area grow. As with all governance, there is the need to focus on the big picture and continuously move forward, resolve issues, and strengthen government practices.

Watch for yourself.......

What Does the Economy Look Like in 2024? (Projections)

It appears by the projections offered by most economists that the U.S. is poised to have a descent 2024. There are some variabilities in their projections with most indicating a slowdown but still strong performing [Tip: If you reed all the major projections you will come to find what makes them similar and what makes them different.]. There are a few articles below you may want to consider reading. The financial industry often leads these analysis because they have a vest interesting in investment choices. Change in the economy and market impacts their choices greatly.

[For my economic research purposes I am looking at whether this is the year we find a post-Covid homeostasis 23/24' transition of long term strategy, how much of the economy moved online, comparison of pre and post Covid "normal" and whether we should experience higher but steady growth in the years coming forward. You can not project events out of your control but you can say that if many more transactions move online, increase in such actions lead to value creation/GDP, and in turn creates a level of synergy/alignment with different root industries and infrastructure we may see some curving upward over the next 5 years as these elements adapt to each other. We can only make such projections in perfect fishbowl scenario as wishful thinking. Markets are variable and changing all the time so what we know today we may know something more later. As with everything, "or not" because one should continue to question one's own work.]

Will the U.S. Economy Surprise Again 2024?
