Managers Can Boost Performance Through Public Praise (Research)

Sometimes it can be difficult to motivate the workforce and encourage a strong organizational culture. It has been found that those who praise the performance and skills of others can raise overall performance according to the study Manager's Praise Boosts Productivity. There are a few mitigating aspects such as closeness and knowledge of the subject of praise when people were close or distant but overall, it’s a good idea.

Managers often set expectations through performing and explaining what activities or attributes led to success. Others who are similarly motivated often look at the examples as pathways for themselves.

A couple of tips I have learned over the year.

1. Have an idea of what type of skills you want to enhance and praise those. The type of skills you need should be part of the overall short, mid and long term strategic plan.

2. Be genuine in that praise and share what they did based on what you want emulated by other employees. Make sure the people you are promoting are good organizational citizens so when their name is announced it resonates properly by people who know that person.

3. Be diverse in the sense that you can draw as many people into performance as possible. Organizations that can manage in a globally diverse and complex environment are likely to hedge their best skills.
