Delta County Board of Commissioners: Recognizing New Businesses and Attorney Confusion (December, 2023)

The nature of governance is a complex affair that includes all types of desires, needs, interests and outcomes. In some ways government is the the dumping grounds of a collective of societal needs. Because government often becomes the final resting place of decisions it is also the place that allows for new opportunities and new horizons. Delta County is like many other counties in the world, except that the market is on the upswing and they are in the path of potential economic growth. Meeting those challenges is important so we want to see how they are going to do that. 

Watching local government and how it manages and deals with issues such as realignment to global markets and cultural shifts are important in understanding how national system may deal with such changes. These are microcosms for understanding......

A Couple of Thoughts:

1. A sense of community can go a long way and can impact economic outcomes through subtle transactions and trust. To understand a sense of community you can read Dr. David MacMillan concepts of Sense of Community: A Definition and Theory. He is considered one of the leading authorities in the field and his work is interesting. 

2. Looking around for resources and other agencies to strengthen the local economy, or provide guidance, can be helpful in understanding a complex environment and what resources are available. While the organization may focus more on distressed communities, they still have a lot of great advice and guidance. Maybe a few ideas for maximizing assets. The US Economic Development Administration is a good source for tools and information on economic development. 

Their purpose is "To lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy." You can read more about the HERE and check out their resource page HERE (Because I look for grants to help my community I will browse their information to see if there is anything helpful in those endeavors. i.e. fire department.).

A Few Notes: 

-Department of Veterans Affairs: Let us support our vets!

-Natural Resources Outdoors: Concerns over access and money.

-Finance doing well: The county appears to be fiscally solvent.

-Attorney confusion: Concerns over legal coverage, type of attorney, necessity and order of legal representation.

-Recognizing new businesses in county: Its a good idea for the county to start thinking about attracting business, collaborating with Escanaba-Gladstone, rewriting pages to encourage investment, entrepreneur packages, etc. 

-Concern on building inspection: A mention of the need to ensure inspections.
