We still have a crew of individuals out looking for the Queen City shipwreck. The idea hasn't been abandoned. We think we have the right area and are going to canvas the waters for structures. One of the gentleman on the team called me yesterday and said his boat is ready. Last year he had a new boat and I had engine problems. This year I bought a new engine and he got the kinks out of his boat and prepared it for diving.
The primary plan is to save the GPS coordinates each time we troll the area so that different boats can pick up where another left off last time. The structures, fish schools, rock masses, sunken cars, etc. that we find in each area are going to be put on a private NOAA depth map of the area.
Both boats will sonar the bottom while trolling for fish (two birds one stone as we have to move slow), put down an underwater camera and figure out whether its worth coming back and diving as a team.
We figure that even if we don't find the ship we probably know every major structure under the water as well as the best fishing spots. All of the boats have fish finders so it's not going to be a complete loss.
It will be interesting to see what we can discover. In many cases, we may find new things completely unrelated to the Queen City. For example, we might find another ship or we might find something that broke through the ice. Either way it gets us out on the water so that is half the battle as all of us are pretty busy so being on the water is great.
