Attorney General Bill Barr discusses the calling/not-calling military troops for stand-bye.To truly understand what is occurring it is important to look at all sides of an argument. There is the protest side, the police side, the White House Side, and other groups. Listening to all of the sides allows us to make better choices and decisions as situations arise. The problem is that most of the sides seem to not want to find a solution. I believe reform is necessary to help recruit and retain officers as well as ensure that we are encouraging people to improve their lives before we put them in prison. There is no reason to not be fair and polite in all interactions.
The saddest part of this is that it is in our grasp to do amazing things and everyone is jumping in but they are ignoring some important issues in the process. A bad thing happened (has been happening at times for a long time) and still there is very weak investigative systems of poor behavior. Just from personal experience I can agree that working internal is better than external but that external must be present to ensure that the internal does their job. There should always be the possibility that independent people from the outside will investigate to help keep everyone honest. That makes the assumption they have good values and want what is best for their country in the long run. Many times internal people are friends with the offenders and seem to turn a blind eye because they don't want to "shake the tree" and be fired themselves. Some are trying to do the right thing and some intentionally trying to do the wrong thing and engaged in bad behavior. I can agree and disagree with anything and everything but this is not about feet dragging anymore. No matter what religion one is part of we must be "just" first before having a Justice Department. Allowing criminals to walk without accountability or allowing officers to not be held account doesn't allow good people to live in peace and good officers to rise through the ranks.
There is a win win situation if our leaders want to put down some of the politics and take it. I don't see this as a Republican vs. Democrat argument although some have made it that way. I believe it is a truth issue, what is morally the right thing to do, and what is best to improve our long term economic opportunities for future generations. We should be a nation that strives to live peacefully with each other with good values. We can't police our way to idealism but we can have police help us on the way and ensure that truly bad people don't unnecessarily harm or delay our national path. They have an important role to play but the metrics are a little off and this is why these things are occurring.
