Shelter Island was built more than 50 years ago to handle
the needs of large Navy ships (1).
In modern times, it caters to restaurants, spas, businesses, boutiques, hotels
and marinas. Originally a sand bank that was partially covered by water it was
built up to 7 feet above high tide (2).
Businesses lease this property from the Port of San Diego.
The amenities its offers are many which include a park, boat
launch, fire rings, fishing pier, picnic tables, telephones, and more (3).
Of particular interest are the art pieces and local vendors sell right on the
grass. The view is spectacular and you can get some of the best skyline shots
of the city here. You can also see some of the sculptures and gawk at the 100’s
of boats.
